Microsoft Excel Workshop

On 4th April 2017

GK collaborated with EMAS Peer Tutors to conduct a Microsoft Excel Workshop for all JCUS students. It was held at Room C4-05, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Moh Moh San and I arrived early to set up the computer with help from Mrs Toh, our GK Chapter Advisor.

We commenced the session by introducing ourselves and talk about what we are going to learn for the day. Nicolas, one of our past Learning Support staff, shared with us a list of items to teach with pictorial demonstration. Moh Moh San taught explicitly (well done!) while I supported by repeating what she said and emphasising on the important things to look out (e.g. different cursors for different functions). We also stopped to check with our peers if they have any questions or problems before moving on.

However, we forgot to take pictures for documentation. Also, we mistook a lower case letter for an upper case and that led us to a different site. Moreover, our styles of teaching might not cater for visual learners; there were kinaesthetic (have students to use Excel during the session), auditory (verbal instructions) elements, but we did not consider visual aspect of learning. We are lucky to have Mrs Toh who helped us by writing down the important points on the whiteboard.

In the future, to address the aforementioned issues, we will arrange photographer with Branding department when lack of manpower. Additionally, we have to check and test the details of the links again, taking note of the use of uppercase or lowercase letters. We will also have one of the facilitators to translate verbal instructions on the whiteboard.

The session ends at 4:28 pm with a total of 9 attendees. Reflecting on this program, one of our strengths is our responsiveness to each other's actions; Moh Moh San redemonstrated the techniques while I repeated what she said. It was also our first time conducting a workshop for our peers, so we felt that it was an overall success. We're looking forward to more collaboration in the near future!
